Overview
Keeping a double album interesting is no small task, but Biffy Clyro make a convincing case for going big on ‘Opposites’. Given their seemingly endless supply of songs, perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. There are some huge Rock ballads here, with choruses made for festival fields and stadium crowds losing their voices together. The experimental touches add character, and there’s enough energy in the riffs and rhythms to keep both halves moving - it’s their classic Post-Hardcore energy that forms the backbone of the album. The concept works nicely too, setting difficult experiences from the past against the possibility of a better future and giving the title some emotional weight. If ‘Only Revolutions’ took them into the big leagues, this feels like a band growing into that position - there’s a maturity to the songwriting that makes those enormous moments feel earned. A strong, ambitious record that gives you plenty to get your teeth into across its opposite sides.
Recommended for new and old mon the biff fans alike. Opposites attract.

It’s classic Storm Thorgerson, turning a stark landscape into something beautifully unsettling. The image is supposedly of the world’s oldest living tree in Chile, while the ghostly bones dripping from its branches add an ominous edge. That meeting of life and death ties neatly into the concept of ‘Opposites’.
