Overview
This is an album that planted the seeds for what would soon define the Britpop era, pivoting away from the baggy sounds of their debut toward a sharper, distinctly British identity. ‘Modern Life Is Rubbish’ paints a vivid portrait of early-90s England - it’s packed with sly humour, yet equally dreary in parts. Blur sneer at modern monotony here while embracing it as subject matter worth celebrating - rejecting Grunge’s grimness for something quintessentially British: sarcastic, melodic, and deeply rooted in everyday life. Though not yet as anthemic or polished as the band’s later work, decades later it still feels like the moment Blur found their true voice.
Recommended for listeners looking for for the true roots of Britpop.

Album Artwork Rating

It’s an album cover that certainly showcases British imagery (a famous British train), but ultimately, the image is just a train - not all that exciting. Despite its nostalgic feel, ‘Modern Life Is Rubbish’ and so is this album artwork.
