Overview
‘Distance in Static’ is Bonobo doing what he does so well, with a little more pull towards the dancefloor. The rhythms feel punchier in places, giving those beautifully layered arrangements an extra bit of momentum. There’s still plenty of warmth and space to get lost in, and the shifts between quieter passages and more upbeat moments feel natural. Once again, the guest vocalists are brilliantly chosen. Each bringing a distinct tone and personality, with their voices becoming part of the music’s texture while giving it that classic emotional centre that Bonobo is now so well-known for. It’s the sort of record that rewards paying attention to the smaller details, even when a beat is doing its best to get you moving. That balance between intricate production and immediate enjoyment remains a huge part of Bonobo’s appeal. More than a quarter of a century into his career, this is another welcome addition to a catalogue that’s already given us so much.
Recommended for the chilled Bonobo fans looking to start moving their feet.

I loved this cover the moment I saw it. The colour palette and imagery make everything feel as though it’s in motion. Discovering that it’s an edited photograph of crystalline structures under extreme magnification makes it all the more impressive. Bonobo’s artwork usually takes in vast, sweeping landscapes, so there’s something lovely about reversing that perspective and finding the same sense of grandeur in something microscopic.
