Overview
This is seriously smooth listening. ‘Ego Death’ blends Neo-Soul, R&B and Funk through warm keys, deep basslines and loose rhythms that give the whole album an effortless groove. Syd’s understated vocals are so good, bringing intimacy and confidence to songs about love, lust and the complications in between. There’s a refreshing honesty to her delivery, with lots of vulnerability - despite this, still sat behind a cool exterior. The band leave plenty of space for the arrangements to breathe, with subtle guitar melodies and chords, and shifting textures keeping things interesting. Nothing feels overcrowded, and the chemistry between everyone gives every moment real character. The relaxed pacing can occasionally drift, and a little more urgency wouldn’t hurt in places, but the warmth and detail make it easy to settle back in. A cohesive, atmospheric album that rewards a proper listen and makes slowing down feel like the only correct option.
Recommended for the ex-Tumblr stoners looking to chillout to some Odd Future coded Neo-Soul.
