Overview
I went into ‘Open Circle’ expecting something relaxing, but it ended up testing my patience more than soothing it. The atmospheric sounds behind the flute are the parts I enjoyed most, creating a backdrop I’d happily have spent more time with. The flute itself, though, repeatedly pulled me out of that mood, and I found its tone more irritating than calming - sorry Kevin. There are moments of character, and a playful final flute note right at the end of the album did offer some welcome relief and a chuckle. For much of the album, however, I struggled to find something that made me want to stay with it. I respect Locke’s artistry, even if I couldn’t find a way into this particular record. Perhaps watching him performing his famous hoop dancing would help me appreciate the wider picture. As a listening experience on its own, though, I won’t be coming back to this.

Recommended for the spiritual hoop dancing, flute-loving type.

Its a vibey image of Kevin Locke doing his classic hoop dance. Or it could be a guy chucking a slinky in the air.
