Shipwrecking onto ‘Phantom Island’ would be a pleasant surprise for any listener. King Gizzard once again trade their fuzzed-out, freakout psychedelic sound for something more lavish and orchestral - yet unmistakably Gizz. The band dives headfirst into Symphonic Rock with sweeping strings, brass flourishes, and wonderfully unexpected moments. It’s a bold move, but also the logical next step for a band that refuses to stay put - something listeners have come to respect them for. While it may not convert every fan who prefers their rawer, classic Psychedelic style, ‘Phantom Island’ is another testament to King Gizzard’s creative restlessness, and there’s plenty to discover on this wildly imagined island.
Recommended for orchestral listeners looking for a bridge into the psychedelic grandeur.
