Overview
Lauryn Hill’s presence on this record is something else. She raps with such confidence that you hang on every word, then turns around and delivers some incredible vocal melody - it’s insane. Being this good at both feels unfair. ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ brings Hip-Hop, Soul and R&B together with rich harmonies and grooves that give her room to be both commanding and vulnerable. Love, heartbreak, faith and learning your own worth run through the album, with the classroom interludes tying those lessons together to form a concept that isn’t necessary, but wouldn’t feel right without it. It all flows so naturally that you’re happy to follow wherever she takes it. Some of the songs are absolutely jaw-dropping, and hearing them within the bigger story makes them even more rewarding. It’s frustrating that this remains her only solo studio album, because who knows what other genius would could have gotten - maybe it makes this release even sweeter.
Recommended for Hip-Hop lovers ready to pull up a chair and really take some life-lessons.

It shouldn’t work as well as it does, but I’m into it. There’s a nice charm to the DIY look, and it captures the album’s personality and concept perfectly.
