Overview
An album that truly prides itself in storytelling. ‘Ready to Die’ drops you into Biggie’s world through scenes of ambition, violence and survival, delivered with a flow that makes every second of this release sound effortless. His voice carries so much character, switching between dark humour, outright arrogance and moments of unsettling vulnerability. The production balances hard drums and gritty loops with warm Soul and Funk samples, which give plenty of room to allow Biggie to command your attention. A few skits interrupt the momentum, and although it is somewhat of a masterpiece, its length at times makes it feel like a bit of a slog - but neither takes much away from the quality of the rapping. It’s the detail, timing and personality that keep pulling you back. A gripping Hip Hop landmark that makes an absolute case for Biggie’s place among the greats.
Recommended for the 90s Hip Hop heads who would die on the hill that East Coast rap is better.
