Overview
This is one of the best Progressive Rock albums around. ‘Animals’ takes Roger Waters’ Orwell-inspired vision of greed, class and power and turns it into something bleak (obviously), biting and completely absorbing. The concept is brilliant, and David Gilmour’s guitar work brings it vividly to life. His playing is insanely impressive - moving between sharp, aggressive passages and melodies that seem to hang in the air. The layered guitar harmonies that he builds are particularly special, with moments where everything locks together perfectly. It’s a powerful reminder of just how well Gilmour’s musical instincts complement Waters’ conceptual drive, giving the anger and cynicism real emotional depth. The extended arrangements give these ideas room to develop, with brooding keyboards and a patient rhythm section holding the tension. Pink Floyd are masters of atmosphere, and here they’ve created something dark, immersive and beautiful all at once. It won’t be to everyone’s taste, but this is absolutely an album worth putting everything else on hold for.

Recommended for those pissed off at a broken class system who need to chillout to awesome guitar solos.

One of the most iconic album covers of all time? The power station’s proximity to the band’s London residence at the time adds a nice personal touch. And, of course, the genius of Hipgnosis completely shines through here.
