Overview
For a debut to feel this much like a greatest hits album is actually ridiculous. ‘Can’t Buy A Thrill’ brings together some of the finest songs of the 70s, with Steely Dan already sounding completely assured. The whole band is on outstanding form, with expressive vocals, brilliant guitar work and a rhythm section that makes everything feel effortless. The arrangements are incredible, with guitars, keys and vocal harmonies weaving around each other while leaving those memorable melodies room to shine. Rock, Pop and Jazz sit comfortably together, and there’s a slyness to the lyrics that gives all that polish an impressive edge. You can get completely absorbed in the details or just sit back and enjoy how good the songs are. It’s the sort of record that makes you keep saying, “Oh, this song is on here too?”. It’s confident, beautifully put together and full of tunes that have thoroughly earned their legendary status.

Recommended for the dads with taste, and their kids who are finally up for embracing some good music.

It’s messy, it doesn’t make a lot of sense, and its full of erotic undertones. It’s notoriously voted as a terrible album cover, but I am kinda into it. It feels classic at this point.
