BUTLEY PRIORY

Overview
Butley Priory is a medieval gatehouse and residential recording location at The Clumps in Butley, near Woodbridge, Suffolk. Built in the early fourteenth century for an Augustinian monastery founded in 1171, the surviving gatehouse was later converted into a country house and extensively restored in the 1920s. Its vaulted Great Hall, drawing room and surrounding gardens provide space for musicians to stay and record together, bringing equipment into the house for individual projects. Singer and composer Frances Shelley recorded there with a small ensemble by 2008, while Arctic Monkeys arrived with producer James Ford in summer 2021 to work on The Car. Their stay followed the country-house recording tradition of the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, capturing material that was developed further at other studios. Butley continues to welcome recording projects alongside weddings, private stays and other events.
