CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH

Central Baptist Church

Overview
Central Baptist Church is a Grade II listed church on Devonshire Road in Southampton’s Polygon district. Built in 1910 to designs by George Baines & Son, it originally served the former East Street congregation as Polygon Baptist Church. Its red-brick exterior combines carved stone details, a prominent corner tower and an openwork wooden lantern above the surrounding streets. Inside, the broad auditorium features exposed timber roof construction, granite columns and curved rows of seating, with a separate hall and vestry adjoining the main building. In 1948, the Polygon, Carlton and Portland congregations united under the Central Baptist name. By July 2019, worship had moved into the adjoining hall while the main church stood out of use. The wider complex continued serving local residents, retaining its place in the neighbourhood through worship and community activities.
