AMIGO STUDIOS

Overview
Amigo Studios operated at 11114 Cumpston Street in North Hollywood from 1968 until the building’s demolition in 2004. Producer Snuff Garrett bought the existing studio from saxophonist Steve Douglas in 1968, rebuilding it with J. J. Cale and Dave Mancini. Although Garrett sold Snuff Garrett Productions to Warner Bros. that year, Warner did not acquire and rebuild the studio itself until January 1971, when it became Warner Bros. Recording Studios - despite being still acknowledged as Amigo to most of the Industry after the change. The renewed complex combined recording rooms with disc mastering, initially using 16-track equipment before expanding with new consoles and tape systems. Chet Himes bought the site in 1984 and restored the Amigo name. During its final two decades, Amigo housed Neve V-Series and SSL 4000 consoles, a 3M 32-track digital recorder, and a Neumann/Sony mastering room. The Cumpston Street building was cleared for the NoHo Commons redevelopment in 2004, ending more than three decades of studio use at the address.
