CHALICE RECORDING STUDIOS
Overview
Chalice Recording Studios has operated at 845 North Highland Avenue in Hollywood, Los Angeles, since August 2002. Ben Tao spent three years converting two adjacent buildings formerly occupied by Mix Magic into a three-room studio, with self-contained rooms and lounges rather than a conventional house-style layout. Studio A opened around a 96-input SSL 9000J console, while Studio B was built around a Neve 88R; later expansion added smaller writing, overdub, and mixing rooms, including SSL-equipped spaces. By the late 2010s, Chalice had grown into a five-room facility, and its larger rooms continued to pair analogue desks with Pro Tools-based production. The studio’s dark wood interiors and individually styled lounges gave the rooms a distinct visual identity, but its lasting appeal has been its ability to keep full-band tracking, vocal recording, beat-making, and final mixes under one roof. Chalice Recording Studios remains active at the Highland Avenue address.
