LARRABEE WEST
Overview
Larrabee West was the final name used from 1991 to it’s closure for the original Larrabee Sound Studios at 8811 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. The site’s recording history began in 1968, when songwriters Gerry Goffin and Carole King established a small studio inside a 1922 former bank building on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Larrabee Street. Jazz drummer and producer Jackie Mills and his wife, Dolores Kaninger, acquired the facility in 1969, with their son Kevin Mills taking over in the mid-1980s. Larrabee Sound Studios became an early Los Angeles adopter of Solid State Logic consoles in 1979, establishing a lasting reputation for high-end Pop, R&B, Dance, and Hip-Hop production. When the company opened Larrabee North at 4162 Lankershim Boulevard in 1991, the original location became Larrabee West. A major 2002 refurbishment gave Studio A an SSL 9000 K Series XL console, but the historic West Hollywood site closed as a recording studio the following year. The building later transitioned to nightlife and hospitality uses, while the Larrabee name continued at the North Hollywood facility.
