RECORD ONE
Overview
Record One opened in 1979 at 13849 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, formed by engineer-producer Val Garay with investment from Melvin Simon. The 7,000-square-foot building housed two recording rooms and rehearsal space, and Garay equipped it initially around custom API consoles. Allen Sides bought the facility in 1988, retaining the Record One name while bringing it into the Ocean Way group. His first changes were to the monitoring, after which the two rooms became an extension of Ocean Way’s Hollywood operation. A custom 112-input Neve with GML automation was built for the Quincy Jones and Bruce Swedien period; later, Studio A received the 100-input SSL 8000 G+ and Studio B an 80-input SSL 9000 J. The latter pair made Record One a notable early-1990s destination for large-scale tracking and mixing. In 2004, Dr Dre took both rooms on an exclusive five-year lockout. When they reopened in 2009, Studio A was rebuilt around the former Todd-AO SSL Film console, while Studio B retained an SSL 9080J and the rooms used Ocean Way’s LCR monitor systems. Dre and Larry Chatman purchased Record One in 2015, keeping the Sherman Oaks site and its original name intact.
