THE SANCTUARY
Overview
The Sanctuary was Mac Miller’s first proper Los Angeles home studio, built with engineer Josh Berg in a room beside the pool at Miller’s Studio City rental. The house was leased from 2011 to 2014, with the studio taking shape around 2012. Berg and Miller turned the extra room into a compact recording space, using a closet as a vocal booth and filling the room with consoles, speakers, rugs, candles and a Buddha head that Miller carried between studios. The Sanctuary became the centre of an intensely productive period: friends and collaborators passed through informally, while Miller and Berg recorded for most of each day. It was the crucial setting for the work that led to Watching Movies with the Sound Off, Faces and the early Balloonerism sessions. Miller eventually left the house in 2014.
