THE TRAP
Overview
The Trap was the guest-house studio at Syd Bennett and her brother Taco’s Los Angeles family home. Bennett began by making recordings in a two-room bedroom setup when she was fourteen, then moved the gear into the vacant guest house, where there was room for a drum kit, a live area and the stream of friends who made up the first Odd Future circle. From around 2007, that room became the group’s after-school and weekend base for beats, verses, mixes and self-taught engineering. Bennett, then Syd tha Kyd, served as the group’s DJ and recording engineer, giving the early work a practical, made-by-friends character rather than the polish of a commercial studio. Goblin was recorded and mixed there in 2010-2011, making The Trap central to Odd Future’s first national breakthrough. By 2013, Bennett was already referring to it as her old studio.
