Overview
Mad Dog Studios ran through two Southern California locations between 1980 and 2008. Dusty Wakeman and Mark Avnet opened the original room in Venice in January 1980, beginning with a Scully 16-track machine and Tascam Model 10 desk before quickly upgrading to an Otari MTR-90 and Auditronics console. When Avnet left in 1986, Michael Dumas became Wakeman’s partner; together they installed a 32-channel Neve 8108 and Studer 24-track machine, establishing Mad Dog as a working studio for Los Angeles Rock, Country, Roots, and independent sessions. After roughly fifteen years in Venice, they moved in 1995 to a former rehearsal complex in Burbank’s Media District. The larger site grew into a 6,000-square-foot, three-room facility: Studio A held a 40-channel Neve 8088 with Flying Faders and a Studer A800; Studio B handled overdubs and mixing; and the 2,500-square-foot Stage accommodated open-room recording and video work. The Burbank location closed in 2008, after which Wakeman moved toward Mojave Audio and smaller private workspaces.
