THE GREEN BUILDING

Overview
The Green Building is Rick Nowels’ private two-room recording studio in Santa Monica, California, operating from 2007 to the present. It functions as the long-term creative base for Nowels and his regular engineering collaborators Kieron Menzies and Dean Reid, rather than as a publicly advertised commercial facility. The rooms are structured around a fast, writing-led workflow, allowing ideas, vocal takes, arrangement, production, and mixing to develop within the same working environment. Its setup combines a Pro Tools-centred production system with analogue recording hardware, keyboards, guitars, and selected microphones and outboard equipment. Vocal chains have included a Shure SM7B through a BAE 1073 and UREI 1176, while the Manley Gold microphone and Teletronix LA-2A have also been used for specific singers. The studio is designed for close collaboration rather than large live-band sessions, with Nowels commonly working at piano, keyboards, or guitar while an engineer records and develops the material alongside him.
