Overview
Opened in 2002 by husband-and-wife producer and engineering team Bill Skibbe and Jessica Ruffins, Key Club Recording Company is an analogue-forward residential recording studio located in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Skibbe drew upon construction experience gained at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio and John McEntire’s Soma Electronic Music Studios when the pair converted the historic West Main Street building. Dating from the 1880s, the structure previously served as a sailors’ boarding house, a lumberyard, the 1960s Rock and Folk venue Unicorn Key Club, and later a locksmith’s shop - the source of the modern studio’s name. Its technical centrepiece is a rare, bright-red Daniel Flickinger N32 Matrix console originally custom-built for Sly Stone, complemented by two-inch analogue tape and Pro Tools HD recording. Still operated by Skibbe and Ruffins, Key Club Recording Company remains active at its original Benton Harbor site and also houses Skibbe Electronics.
