DEAD AUNT THELMA’S STUDIO
Overview
Established as a private project studio in 1990 by songwriter and producer Scott Parker, Dead Aunt Thelma’s Studio is a long-running commercial recording and mixing facility located in Portland’s historic Sellwood neighbourhood. The operation opened its purpose-designed commercial space in February 1993 and underwent a major technical upgrade in 1996. Designed by the Russ Berger Design Group, the compact multi-room complex occupies a building that previously housed an ice-cream parlour and later a beauty salon - a history reflected in the front lounge’s nickname, “the parlor.” The facility combines a carefully tuned live room and isolation spaces with a comfortable lounge and private rear patio. Its current technical centrepiece is a 24-channel API 2448 mixing console, supported by Pro Tools HDX, premium outboard equipment and an extensive microphone collection. Managed for many years by engineer Mike Moore, Dead Aunt Thelma’s remains an active facility and one of Portland’s longest-running independent recording studios.
