STUDIO X

Overview
Opened in early 1992 as the flagship recording room within Seattle’s Bad Animals complex, Studio X became one of the Pacific Northwest’s most historically significant commercial tracking facilities. Designed by studio bau, the original Belltown studio featured a cavernous 35-by-60-foot live room with a 25-foot ceiling, producing the powerful natural drum ambience heard across numerous landmark Grunge and Alternative Rock recordings. Its control room was originally centred on a 64-input SSL 4064 G-Series console equipped with Ultimation moving-fader automation and Total Recall, supported by Studer and Otari analogue tape machines alongside Sony digital multitrack systems. In 1997, Studio X separated from Bad Animals and continued independently at 2212 4th Avenue under longtime manager and engineer Reed Ruddy. Following the sale of the block for redevelopment, the studio relocated to Capitol Hill on 31 October 2018, rebuilding its operation inside a spacious 1920s former church hall. The modern facility retains the Studio X name and extensive vintage equipment collection while combining a Neve 8424 console, Pro Tools integration, orchestral tracking, live performance recording, and video production.
